Why clothes smell in Hong Kong's damp season, and what helps

When the air is wet, clothes dry slowly, and slow drying is where the smell starts.

✣

The short answer

Clothes smell in damp weather mainly because they stay wet too long. Shorten the drying time and most of the smell goes away.

Why slow drying smells

Fabric left damp for hours gives odour-causing bacteria time to grow. Thick towels and dense cotton are usually the first to smell.

Washing

Don't overfill the drum, so water and detergent can reach everything. Run an extra spin to get more water out before you hang anything.

Drying indoors

Leave space between garments and dry them in a closed room with a dehumidifier or fan running, not in an open living room.

Storage

Put clothes away only once they are completely dry. Leave a little space in the wardrobe so air can move between them.

In short

Dry fast, don't store anything damp, and let air move. Fragrance works best on fabric that is fully dry.
