White marks on dark clothes after washing: causes and fixes

White marks on black clothes usually come from how the wash is loaded and run, not from the detergent alone.

✣

The short answer

White marks usually mean the detergent didn't fully dissolve or rinse out. A lighter load and a longer cycle fix most cases.

Common causes

An overfilled drum, a very short quick-wash cycle, or a pod placed on top of the clothes.

What to do

Put the pod in the empty drum first, wash darks inside out, and fill the drum no more than three-quarters.

If marks are already there

Rinse the garment again with water only. Don't rub dark fabric hard.

In short

Pod in first, don't overfill, turn darks inside out, and pick a cycle long enough for the pod to dissolve fully.
